Day 22

I love this section of Jacob chapter 1.  I find that it provides much guidance for ones life...
      1. we first need to obtain our errand - purpose
      2. magnify our callings working diligently and unceasingly...
I read an article today about a young boy in Minneapolis who "according to the highest authorities of the Tibetan Buddhist order, he is the reincarnation of the speech, mind and body of a lama, or spiritual guru, who died in Switzerland six years ago. Jalue is said to be the eighth appearance of the original lama, born in 1655."

Even though I do not believe in reincarnation I have to admit that I admire this family for seeing the devine errand for this boy and how they are doing everything possible for him to fulfill it.  Makes me wonder.  Am I truly converted??? Have I received the confirmation of what my errand is in this life???   I beleive  Elder Robert D. Hales gave the answer in yesterdays quote for the day.

  1. Interesting article Elin... I just have to say this (while concurrently studying the struggles of the Israelites to not be drawn into the false beliefs of the Canaanites), you are correct to point out the power of our covenants made with God, starting with baptism and the incredible gift of the Holy Ghost. I don't think we DO fully appreciate the power we are allowed to access. I'm not sure we're physically and mentally equipped to do so. But perhaps spiritually we can grasp some of it. Some people might be given a glimpse early in life as to what their mission or life's work should entail - Nephi is an example of this. As I finished reading the account of his life I was filled with gratitude for his example of faith in following the plan laid out for him. No where does it mention his children carrying on the priestly or prophet duties of his people - he must have known grief in one form or another there, and certainly in that he saw the eventual destruction of his people. But he also saw many great and glorious things, and he remained positive and faithful to the end. I draw so much strength and perspective from his testimony recorded in the final chapters of 2 Nephi. He was "groomed" to fulfill his mission, and he stayed true.

But we are not all going to know our full mission like that. Somehow - I'm not quite sure how or why - there must be wisdom in that. Maybe it's because that's how we acquire the characteristics we need? Walking by faith, in the dark, in the dreariest of days, unsure where our next decision - or the next event not of our making - will take us... not easy. Maybe Nephi would admire THAT. ? At least we have some light on "the big goal" and the steps for attaining it... we have a pattern to follow. And the company of good friends. So if we stay focused we should be guided along the way. That's the hope I cling to anyway!! :)

  2. Lisa, I like your thoughts here and I agree that perhaps we don't need to know the whole errand in our lives. It made me think that we can find piece knowing what the Lord would like us to do by receiving and accepting callings with an openness to learning. Even though callings vary in many different lights we can learn much and gain experience in life. These callings are not just in the form of church callings we are called by being family members, community members, and so forth.
