“I have little or no fear for the young man or the young woman, who
honestly and conscientiously supplicate God twice a day for the
guidance of His Spirit. I am sure that when the temptation comes they
will have strength to overcome it by the inspiration that shall be given
to them. Supplicating the Lord for the guidance of His Spirit places
around us a safeguard, and if we….honestly seek the guidance of the
Spirit of the Lord, I can assure you that we will receive it.”
~ President Heber J. Grant
What are some things you talk to the Lord about?
How does He direct you for good?
I just had a thought while reading Alma 36 about Alma "remembering" - in particular how remembering the captivity of the people and how they were delivered helps us. In v. 29 he says he has always retained this knowledge in his memory and he counsels Helaman to do likewise. I began to wonder about some more modern examples of being in "captivity" and what remembering these examples can do for us. This is why we talk about the Mormon pioneers so much! This is an example from our own dispensation! They were delivered out of captivity in just as miraculous circumstances as the Israelites and the Nephites in their time. I began to see the great worth of sharing general histories and personal and family histories with our children. This is all part of the "remembering" that helps strengthen us and point us to Christ. He has literally paid for our captivity and bondage under sin. A big connection for me in this reading today!
ReplyDeleteLisa & Elin: In addition to the Mormon pioneer "captivity" there are several modern day examples...we are sometimes in bondage physically (with our health/addictions), emotionally (with fears/anxiety/mental illness), financially (debt), mentally (again mental illness). The Lord can cover, release us from these as well. Sometimes like the Book of Mormon peoples who were faithful and obedient in all things suffered at the hands of the Lamanites, and the Lord showed his power for them. Sometimes we bring it upon ourselves thorugh our disobedience like other Book of Mormon peoples. The point is that no matter how we "got" into bondage, only the Lord can get us out! We have the scriptures to draw on to help us have the hope we need to believe it!
